Service to Community & World

Jesus sends us into the World to serve by:

Feeding the Hungry

The Food Pantry provides immediate food support for families in need.  Bags of non-perishable food items are available for distribution during regular church office hours.  Volunteers regularly stock the pantry through calls for needed grocery items.  In addition, personal hygiene products (shampoo, soap) are available on request.

The Bread Ministry  began in 2000.  Teams of volunteers collect bread donated by local bakeries.  This bread is repackaged at St. James and distributed to area agencies.  Teams pick up bread three times a week and serve for a whole week.   Each team volunteers about every four weeks.

Each year the Youth Fellowship group sponsors a Rise Against Hunger project. Rise Against Hunger is an international hunger relief organization that distributes food and life-changing aid to the world’s most vulnerable people.  This family friendly mission event allows volunteers of all ages to participate in packaging nutritious meals that are dispersed around the world.

Community Garden

Volunteers plant and care for vegetable beds and donate produce to local food distribution areas. Different types of fruit are also grown.  This is an all age friendly project with different events and demonstrations happening during the year. A family day where families can plant vegetables of their own to take home and St James Day School learning events take place in the garden also.

Additionally, persons may rent a bed for personal use for a year. A portion of their produce will also be donated to a distribution area.

Providing Shelter

St James UMC participates in the Habitat for Humanity-Apostles Build program.  Each year St James partners with churches in our area to build a home.

St James commits several mission teams to ASP each year.  A youth team and their adult chaperons spend a week repairing and rebuilding homes each June. During the Spring and Fall adult teams work to make homes safer, warmer and drier.

Clothing Needs

St James donates clothing to those in need through several mission projects.  Each winter we collect new underwear and socks for children entering Foster care situations.  We partner with a public elementary school for many projects including their in – school clothes closet. Underwear, pull on pants and socks are present for any “accidents” while at school.

Supporting the Meek

A Girls Scout troop meets on Wednesday nights in Montague Hall.  Please contact Pines of Carolina Girl Scout Council for additional information 919-782-3021.

We partner with a public elementary school providing supplies, mentoring and other forms of support.  Each year a school supply drive provides student supply needs and also classroom supplies.  St James assists with their clothes closet.

St James Preschool School is a ministry of the church and provide half day instruction.

Our Angel Tree ministry bring joyful gifts as well as much needed clothing to area children.  Each year  children from a group or agency are selected; their needs and wishes identified.  Volunteers select an angel off the tree and purchase gifts for that child.

Agape Shoebox mission is part of Project Agape, a ministry to Armenia.  This is a collaborative effort between the North Carolina and Western North Carolina Conferences and a joint effort with the Armenian Apostolic Church.  Volunteers “adopt” an empty shoe box and fill it with personal  supplies, articles of clothing, educational supplies and something fun.  A list of suggested items is supplied and determined by gender and age of child.
