NEW SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS TODAY: Starting today, we are beginning a new Sunday School class for youth during both the 9:45 and 11:00 services in Montague Hall. Come to whichever one fits best into your schedule! If you have any questions, please contact Randy Kerr.
KIDS CLUB TONIGHT: Please join us for Kids Club tonight where the Lamar family will be sharing stories from their summer adventure. Can't wait to see you there! Remember there will be no Kids Club next Sunday, 10/22. We hope to see everyone at the Fall Festival!
CHURCHWIDE WORKDAY will be on Saturday, October 21 at 8:00 am. On the schedule of work are several projects across the property, including work on lobby doors, clean kitchen, remove old carpet from Montague Hall and install new carpet squares, load and deliver furniture from Montague Hall to Habitat for Humanity, scan paper documents to digital files and shred. There are tasks for every ability level. Please come and join in the work!
COMMITMENT SUNDAYS: We will be presenting our pledge commitments during worship services on October 22 and 29. As you prepare to return your pledge sheet, please spend some time this week praying over your commitment: how is God calling you to step forward in faith and give to the church of your finances, your talent and your energy? Please complete the front with your financial commitment to God. On the blank back, please spend some time writing about your commitments of prayer, talents, time and energy. Bring those sheets with you to worship next Sunday and plan to return them as an act of worship. Pledge sheets were included in the October newsletters. If you need one, copies are available on the sanctuary table and in the church lobby.
FALL FESTIVAL, OCTOBER 22, 4-6 PM IN CARSON HALL: Calling all children 5th grade or younger to put on your friendly costumes, grab your candy buckets and bring your family, friends, and neighbors for games, prizes, activities, a free hot dog supper and lots of candy treats. Youth and adults, please sign up in the lobby to volunteer for this event! Donate individually wrapped candies or small prizes, make cookies for the cookie walk or help run a fun game. CALLING ALL DESK VOLUNTEERS: Please make plans to join us for a volunteer meeting in Saints Hall on Thursday, October 26 at 10:00 am. We will serve pastries, juice and coffee and discuss some new volunteer information updates. If you're not currently a volunteer, but might like to be, come check us out!
2017 YAM JAM VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Want to get a little dirty and help a good cause? We are assembling a team to glean sweet potatoes with the Society of St. Andrews on Saturday, October 28. We'll meet at the church at 9:30 am and then ride to our assigned field in either Wake, Johnston or Harnett counties to glean for 2-3 hours. (Exact field location won't be assigned until week of event.) Please sign up on the clipboard wall in the church lobby by October 23. All ages are welcome! HABITAT FOR HUMANITY: We need volunteers Saturday, October 28, to help with the Apostles' Build home we are committed to with several other churches in the area. We will meet in the Construction Facility on Westinghouse Blvd. at 11:00AM to begin working on the interior and exterior walls of the house. You will get to watch the Habitat homeowner drive the first nail into the home! Then volunteers will split into 2 groups: 1 group stays to build walls, 1 group goes to the site to prep for walls. All walls and volunteers will go to the site around 3pm. The remainder of the workday will be spent working at the construction site raising walls. A snack lunch will be provided. 2017 CHILI COOK-OFF entry forms are available on the clipboard wall in the church lobby. Enter your best chili recipe for the competition and lunch on Sunday, November 5, in Carson Hall. The UMYF will be selling desserts to support their trip to Pilgrimage. Deadline for chili entries is Wednesday, November 1. Contact Sue King for more information.
NEXT BOOK CLUB SELECTION AVAILABLE: Our next St. James Book Club selection, Allow God to Wear Your Face: Spiritual Care for Those Who Are Ill, is now available in the Ann Bridgers Library. We have several copies that are waiting to be checked out. All book-lovers are invited to read it and come join the Book Club discussion on November 12!
CHURCH LEADERSHIP SAVE THE DATE: Leadership Training for ALL members of committees and chairs of committees will be led by the Nominations Committee on Sunday, November 19 from 2:45 (refreshments begin) to 5:00 pm. Child care will be provided for all those who are in need of it. No matter how long you have served on a committee, this is a meeting you need to be part of so that we begin 2018 ready to be in effective ministry together and so that we are unified in our ministry approach! Please put the date on your calendar and look for more information in your inbox!
FOOD PANTRY NEEDS: This month has been a record month for the food pantry! In the first two weeks of October, we have already handed out more bags of food than we have in each of the last two months! We could really use some help restocking the shelves. Our biggest need is for medium-sized boxes of cereal. Store brands are fine. We find that the larger, family-size boxes just don't fit as well in the bags. Thanks for your donations!
